Design and Technology

Subject definition:

Design and technology is about designing and making products that solve problems and evaluating how successful they are.

h purposeful and engaging design and making. Design and Technology (DT) plays a vital part in our curriculum across all year groups. It is practical, exciting and an engaging area of learning. We believe that Design and Technology encourages children to think creatively and to solve problems, both as individuals and as part of a team. It motivates children to be active learners and to address challenges when they occur. In each year group, children are given opportunities to design, make and evaluate a variety of products.

At North Farnborough Infant School we want all children to:

  • To design products that have a clear purpose based on design criteria
  • To select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks, for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing.
  • Explain why materials have been selected for a specific purpose
  • To evaluate their ideas and products against set design criteria
  • To build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable
  • To use a range of ingredients to prepare a healthy dish
